Fosamax(bisphosphonates)

Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are typically prescribed to women who are post-menopausal to prevent or treat osteoporosis. These medications target the cells that break down bone, making the bones thicker and less likely to break. Those cells are called osteoclasts. Fosamax works by inhibiting those cells. Other medications that are bisphosphonates are Boniva and Actonel. Use of these medications has been linked to cases of jawbone decay or osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

For cancer patients whose disease has spread to the bone causing severe bone pain or fractures, Fosamax has also been prescribed. A reason that bisphosphonates may sometimes do the opposite of their intended effect is that osteoclasts prompt osteoblasts to form. These osteoblasts are the cells that build up bone.

Osteonecrosis Of The Jaw ( ONJ)

When the jaw does not heal after minor surgery that causes the bone to be exposed, this is called Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Some of the symptoms of ONJ are severe infections and swelling and loosening of the teeth. Often, the dying bone tissue must be treated with long-term antibiotic therapy or be removed during surgery. Patients are advised to avoid having major dental work while taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates due to increased risk of ONJ.

What are the statistics?

Over 2,400 patients have reported bone death in their jaws after taking a medication to prevent or treat bone loss since 2001. The majority of these patients were being treated with a potent, intravenously delivered form of the drug.

About 120 people who are taking this drug have reported suffering from such debilitating pain that they have become in need of walkers, crutches or wheelchairs and some even bedridden.

The total number of people suffering from these types of side effects may be much higher since about 90% of drug side effects are never reported to the FDA.

You should always check with your healthcare provider before stopping any prescribed medications.
