Accutane
Accutane is an oral drug developed by the Roche Company for treatment of the most severe form of acne. Where other medications often fall short, Accutane is powerful enough to treat acne that can leave the patient permanently disfigured. However, because Accutane can also have dramatic side effects, certain strict precautions have been laid out for its use.
In October 2001, Congressman Bart Stupak expressed his concerns about Accutane following the suicide of his son who happened to be taking Accutane. The manufacturer of Accutane (Roche) has warned physicians that Accutane can possibly cause "depression, psychotic symptoms, and rarely suicide attempts", but still Roche maintains they believe the drug is safe. Since 1982, there have been over 142 suicides involving Accutane. On November 19, 2004 FDA associate director of drug safety and 20-year veteran, David J. Graham, suggested strict curbs or a complete recall of 5 drugs that are known to have serious or fatal side effects. The 5 drugs that are of concern include: Accutane, Bextra, Crestor, Meridia and Serevent. Accutane has been associated with severe and catastrophic side effects such as: ∙ Birth Defects ∙ Inflammatory Bowel Disease ∙ Damage to Your Liver, Kidneys, Pancreas, Heart, and Eyes ∙ Psychiatric Injuries and Diseases.
