Celebrex
Celebrex is used for adults to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain, and painful menstrual cycles. The use of Celebrex may increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney and cardiovascular problems in those who use it. Although extensive studies have not been done on Celebrex, but researchers believe the same risks associated with Vioxx exist for those taking Celebrex.
Pfizer Inc. said it has found an increased risk of heart attacks with patients taking its top-selling painkiller Celebrex, a drug that is in the same class as Vioxx, but has no plans to remove it from the market. Pfizer announced on December 17 th, 2004 that it found the increased risk in one of two long-term cancer prevention trials, while the other trial showed no increased risk.
Patients in the cancer study were taking 400 milligrams to 800 milligrams of Celebrex daily. The National Cancer Institute suspended the trial because the people on Celebrex showed greater cardiovascular risk than those taking a placebo. A second cancer study found no problems with the drug, Pfizer said.
The new findings for Celebrex come 11 weeks after Merck & Co. recalled Vioxx, a similar Cox-2 arthritis drug. A Vioxx study found the drug doubled the incidence of heart attack and stroke among patients taking it to prevent colon polyps that cause cancer.
Just two weeks ago, Pfizer added new warnings about the risk of life-threatening skin reactions and cardiovascular risks to the label of Bextra, Pfizer’s other Cox-2 drug which was introduced to the market two years after Celebrex.
At least three times since Merck recalled Vioxx, Pfizer issued statements affirming the cardiovascular safety of Celebrex in an apparent attempt to assure patients it was not like Vioxx.
